A Child of Our Time is a secular oratorio by the British composer Michael Tippett (1905–98), who also wrote the libretto. Composed between 1939 and 1941, it was first performed at the Adelphi Theatre, London, on 19 March 1944. The work was inspired by events that affected Tippett profoundly: the assassination in 1938 of a German diplomat by a young Jewish refugee, and the Nazi government's reaction in the form of a violent pogrom against its Jewish population—the so-called Kristallnacht. Tippett's oratorio deals with these incidents in the context of the experiences of oppressed people generally, and carries a strongly pacifist message of ultimate understanding and reconciliation. The text's recurrent themes of shadow and light reflect the Jungian psychoanalysis which Tippett underwent in the years immediately before writing the work.
The oratorio uses a traditional three-part format based on that of Handel's Messiah, and is structured in the manner of Bach's Passions. The work's most original feature is Tippett's use of American spirituals, which carry out the role allocated by Bach to chorales. Tippett justified this innovation on the grounds that these songs of oppression possess a universality absent from traditional hymns. A Child of Our Time was well received on its first performance, and has since been performed all over the world in many languages. A number of recorded versions are available, including one conducted by Tippett when he was 86 years old.

Child of Our Time is a documentary commissioned by the BBC, co-produced with the Open University and presented by Robert Winston. It follows the lives of 25 children, born at the beginning of the 21st century, as they grow from infancy, through childhood, and on to becoming young adults.
The aim of the series is to build up a coherent and scientifically accurate picture of how the genes and the environment of growing children interact to make a fully formed adult. A large portion of the series is made up of experiments designed to examine these questions. The main topic under consideration is: "Are we born or are we made?". The nature of the family in contemporary Britain is also addressed.
The project is planned to run for 20 years, following its subjects from birth until the age of 20. During the first half of its run a set of about three or four episodes was produced annually. After 2008 new episodes became less frequent, and in 2011 there was some doubt about the future of the programme, including from Winston himself. In February 2013 it was announced that the series would resume, with two new episodes presented by Winston. Rather than the psychological experiments of previous series, these episodes focused on the first interviews with the participating children themselves and their families.

Here are four spirituals from Sir Michael Tippett's oratorio 'A Child of Our Time': Steal Away; Nobody Knows the Trouble I see; O by and by; and Deep River. They come from the Last Night of the Proms 2001 in London's Royal Albert Hall, just a few days after the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers in New York. Leonard Slatkin, the scheduled principal conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, felt he could not preside over the usual 'Last Night' shenanigans, with so many of his fellow Americans having just lost their lives, so the programme was changed to reflect the sombre prevailing mood.

According to Tippett's description, "Part I of the work deals with the general state of oppression in our time. Part II presents the particular story of a young man's attempt to seek justice by violence and the catastrophic consequences; and Part III considers the moral to be drawn, if any." He later extended his summary to the following: Part I: The general state of affairs in the world today as it affects all individuals, minorities, classes or races that are felt to be outside the ruling conventions. Man at odds with his Shadow (i.e. the dark side of personality). Part II: The "Child of Our Time" appears, enmeshed in the drama of his personal fate and the elemental social forces of our day. The drama is because the forces which drive the young man to prove stronger than the good advice...

Long road
Of premature decisions
Leaving me cold
With only good intentions
But its you, who
Takes my pain away
You know its you, who
Keeps me wide awake
You know it's you
It's you
This is Our Time to runaway
It's our time we don't have to stay here
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time, forget the past
It's our time we could make it last
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
Long day
Stopping me from saying what I want to say
I wish I could do better
But it's you, who
Know just what I mean
You know its you, who
See what can't be seen
You know it's you
It's you
This is Our Time to runaway
It's our time we don't have to stay here
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time, forget the past
It's our time we could make it last
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is the day we give our own lives away
And we won't do what they say, anymore (Oh oh oh)
We won't walk but we'll run
Until our freedom we've won
And we will know what this fight was for (Oh oh oh)
This is Our Time to runaway
It's our time we don't have to stay here
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time, forget the past
It's our time we could make it last
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time to runaway
It's our time we don't have to stay here
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
Are here with you
This is Our Time, forget the past
It's our time we could make it last
Cause all the things that I never knew that I wanted
